again, the facts are clear, whether mr. ryan likes it or not. second, mr. ryan's budget, which was proposed and supported by house republicans for the fiscal here 2013, would devastate vital services to millions of americans. chairman ryan proudly presented his budget knowing that he wanted to cut the earned income tax credit, slash $134 million from the supplemental nutrition program, and zero out support services for the elderly, disabled, and at-risk young people that would affect something like 23 million americans. in fact, mr. ryan's economic plan was deemed to be so callous that when he spoke at georgetown university, 90 members of the faculty sent him a letter saying that his budget was a complete bastardization of catholic social teaching. as father thomas reese said, i am afraid that chairman ryan's budget reflects the values of his favorite philosopher ayn rand rather than the gospel of jesus christ. mr. ryan says his opponents are liars who want to

one of the things that paul ryan has pledged to do and now mr. romney as well is day one get rid of insurance coverage for birth control for women. you know, 99% of women rely on birth control. this isn't a social issue for women, it's a basic economic issue. it's incredible to have someone running for president who is so out of touch with what women need. >> thank you both. you're being cheered by the crowd and cheered back here in new york. thank you. >> thank you. >>> next, the president talks up his running mate in the sunshine state. stay with you. >> i have never seen clips of a debate, i have never watched any of those reruns from four years ago. >> really? >> from the acceptance speech to the debate or anything, no. life goes on, you move forward, and i don't rehash the past. two years ago, the people of bp made a commitment to the gulf. bp has paid over twenty-three billion dollars to help those affected and to cover cleanup costs. today, the beaches and gulf are open, and many areas are reporting their best tourism seasons in years. and

mr. ryan and mr. romney have served up one big crap burger an another in this race. the most farfetched is the fiction that they're trying to help the middle class. we're joined now by representative john yarmouth, democrat of kentucky, and a member of the house budget committee that mr. ryan chairs. thank you, sir, for joining us. we heard last night from mr. ryan about helping out the middle class. of course, we've also heard mr. romney say that, too. take a listen to this, sir. >> and i will get them lower. let me tell you how we can. i have a plan to cut taxes for middle incomes taxpayers. my plan does this, there will be no tax on interest, dividends, or capital gains for middle income families in america. >> i must draw your attention to that, sir. according to the tack policy center, 70% of the federal tax on capital gains is paid for by the wealthiest 1% of the people, the top 1%. yet mr. romney is telling us his capital gains tax cut, like it's some kind of gift for the middle class. i'm interested in your response to that. >> well, of course, we know that g

. >> john, let me play for you how romney assessed mr. ryan's debating skills on tuesday. this is mitt romney. take a listen. >> i don't know how paul will deal with this debate. obviously, the vice president has done, it's don't know, 15 or 20 debates during his lifetime, experienced debater. this is, i think, paul's first debate. i may be wrong. he may have done something in high school. i don't know. >> he's just trying to lower the expectations as low as they can go, so if ryan does reasonably well, they can convey he's doing better than expected. it's not true. >> this is a seven-term congressman who does p90x every day, runs marathon -- >> he's debated his opponents many times in wisconsin. >> what's he talking about? >> romney knows that. the big question in this campaign is whether it will catch up to him, is he says whatever is convenient, whatever he can get away with saying. whether on something small like whether paul ryan debated his congressional opponents or on something big like his tax cut. >> indeed. robert, what does paul ryan say when joe bidens, i know

do you think this is going to be a washout and that mr. ryan is literally going to trounce biden? >> i was pretty amused by that story, martin, because we were at a paul ryan rally. these are not exactly neutral observers. i suspect they're part of that 90%, 95% i was talking about before, people who observe conservative media and some of those lines they were given there sounded like they were -- they had been previously announced by conservative talk show hosts, but the fact is that this works to biden's benefit because it lowers expectations. there are people who only hearing the jay leno punch lines about joe biden who think he is a bumbling idiot, and here is a guy who has had something like four decades in the senate. people who don't have short memories remember how well he stood up with sarah palin at a time when the question was he had to be impressive without looking like he was picking on her. he played it just right, and i think he knows how to play this situation just right, and paul ryan at the same time has to be careful not to get too wonkish here with a lot of num
